Safe System Assessment | Regional
A freight bypass was proposed, intended to help reduce the impacts of increasing volumes of heavy vehicle traffic passing through the city centre, via outer roads with divided carriageways and roundabouts. Multiple ‘corridors’ with different cross sections were proposed.
The assessment team decided that the best approach for this project was to provide a single matrix for similar intersections / similar lengths, and, a separate matrix for relatively unique intersections. Therefore seven matrixes were utilised.
The assessment team was able to draw on its extensive road safety engineering experience to provide a comprehensive treatments section to improve safe system alignment. The suggestions covered: operating speed, safety barriers, future proofing, median collisions, cyclists and Human factors
