The project involved upgrading the road from a two-way, one-lane sealed lane road to a two-way, two-lane sealed road with sealed shoulders between over ~3.2 kilometres. Key elements of the project included: Widening the existing road formation and sealed carriageway width; Providing sealed shoulders; New swale drains. This was to occur under significant
property acquisition constraints. The audit took this into consideration when assessing the design criteria adopted, as well as the interim nature of the proposed road upgrade.
A key audit finding focussed on the balance between the following design principles: V-ditches and batter slopes, offset to hazards, shoulder width, safety barrier type.
Other issues raised included sight distance due to safety barriers, and intersection layouts with regard to local access arrangements.
