Waverly Gardens Shopping Centre, Mulgrave, Melbourne

This was a DDA compliance audit for this medium sized suburban shopping centre, covering internals and externals. Many issues were maintenance related or misaligned TGSIs, but many were more technical and required a deep understanding of the intent of DDA guidance codes. For example, many TGSIs were installed where there was no ‘continuous travel path’ for blind or vision Impaired people. Hence there was potential for the TGSIs to direct people with vision impairments to hazards within the car park area.

Some of the key guidance materials are the following:

  • Australian Standards & New Zealand Standards: 1428.1- 2009 – Design for access and mobility, including: Wayfinding signage; 1428.4.1-2009 – Tactile Ground Surface Indicators; 2890.6- Off-street Parking for people with disability
  • Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
  • Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) – 2002
  • Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards (DAPS) – 2010
  • National Construction Code / Building Code of Australia
